Fruit of the Spirit

Summer Fruit Devotion: Peace Day 2

Heart & Mind

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.” Romans 8:5-7

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:6-9

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Isaiah 26:3

There really is a battle going on for your mind. Just like “you are what you eat,” your state of mind depends an awful lot on what you think about. Reading and meditating on the Word, praying, worshiping through music, being grateful, and intentionally “setting your mind” on the things of God gives room for the “peace of God” and the “God of peace” to guard your heart and mind and be with you. Anxiety, worry, fear, jealousy, complaining, all steal away peace. God is still there but our ability to see his will and feel his presence are dulled, which ends up spiraling into more anxiety. Mental health is important so if you have anxiety or depression, don’t be afraid to seek medical help, but make sure you are also taking time to set your mind on the Spirit and spiritual things.

Journal time. In a recent message at my church our pastor encouraged, “think about what you think about.” Spend today writing down a few of your thoughts. When you drive somewhere what are you thinking about? When you’re cooking a meal or eating lunch at work what are you thinking about? When you’re scrolling Facebook or Instagram are you thinking at all? Track how many times you think about God or pray throughout the day. I’m asking you to do this so you can get an accurate view of where your mind is. Remember, our fruit is peace, and that comes from a mind set on the Spirit and not our selfish, needy flesh.

Pray with me today. Heavenly Father, we are so grateful that you are the God of peace and that you give us your peace that is so awesome it’s beyond understanding. When we are anxious help our thought to turn to you and your righteousness. When our thoughts turn dark, shine the light of Christ on them. Protect our hearts and minds from the enemy that wants to steal, kill and destroy our peace. We offer our thought to you, the good, the bad, the anxious and ask the Spirit to help us set our minds on your glory, mercy and grace. In the excellent and praiseworthy name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
