Book Review: Lost in the Land of the Midnight Sun
I used to dream of meeting the authors of my favorite books when I was a kid. Now, as I embark on a writing journey myself, I have met some really amazing authors in various groups on the internet.
I first met Christina Cattaine back in March through a podcast she co-hosts, the Christian Indie Writers Podcast. I’ll include the details at the end of this post, but let’s get into my review of Christina’s brand new novel, “Lost in the Land of the Midnight Sun.”
Main character, Angelica, is a troublemaker according to her father. He is the High Priest and has high expectations of his daughter, who feels like a constant failure under his scrutiny and judgement. Her mother is long gone, after travelling to the forbidden south when Angelica was just a girl, and never returning home. Anjelica wants to please God and her father, but can’t quite figure out how. After a visit to her sick grandfather, everything changes and she herself must venture south to continue the quest her mother began all those years ago. Angelica’s life growing up with only the old testament law was harsh and full of judgement, but as she searches for forgiveness, grace finds her.
I loved Lost in the Land of the Midnight Sun. The author weaves themes of religion, duty, calling, and grace throughout the story. It is full of wonderful characters and breathtaking imagery of the Alaskan wilderness where Christina grew up.
I felt myself both cheering for Angelica when she gained understanding and despairing with her when things went awry. She had unique and sometimes frightening visions of the spiritual world. She learns to truly pray from the heart and follow the leading of the Spirit. Her companion dog, Chugiak, was a great character and even got his own chapter that was so well done.
As I read the book, I pondered my own journey of faith and realized how much I take God’s grace for granted. I’m so grateful to have read this story. I wait eagerly for part two after the heart-pounding ending was left wide open for more.
